Realtime Captioning FAQs for Students

How do I receive captions?

Students have the option to sit next to the captioner and view the captioner’s screen or receive the captioning directly to the student’s personal device. Students will meet with the Communication Services Supervisor to set up their virtual captioning meeting link.

Will I have the same captioner for all my classes?

The assignment of a captioner will depend on scheduling and logistics. Each captioner will work with multiple students and will not work exclusively with one student for all of their classes. Whenever possible, there will be a consistent captioner assigned to each course for the quarter.

Where does the captioner sit?

When using an on-site captioner, the captioner will sit where they are able to hear the instructor and see the visual presentations. The student can sit next to the captioner or may use their own electronic device if they wish to sit elsewhere in the room.

In the event an internet connection is unavailable or interrupted, the student will need to sit by the captioner to view live captions.

What happens when I have a remote captioner?

When an in-person captioner is not available, the student will receive captions in their virtual meeting room from an off-site captioner. An SDC staff member or student assistant will provide the remote captioner with access to the classroom audio via a separate microphone and computer logged into the student’s virtual meeting.

What happens if I add, drop, or change a course?

Please request Realtime Captioning accommodations through My SDC Online for any course changes or newly added courses. Notify the Communication Services Supervisor once the changes have been made or if a previously registered course has been dropped.

Note that it may take up to two weeks to receive Realtime Captioning services once your request is submitted.

What if I am going to be absent or if a class is canceled?

If a class is cancelled or a student will not be attending a regularly scheduled class, the student will need to notify the Communication Services Supervisor as soon as possible. The student may also notify the assigned captioner.

When will I receive a transcript for my class?

Students can expect to receive transcripts within 24-48 hours of the class session. If there is a need for a faster turnaround due to an upcoming exam, please make that request to the captioner before the start of class.
