Assistive Listening Devices FAQs for Students

How do I use an Assistive Listening System (ALS) receiver?

Bring the small, portable receiver with you to class, along with the provided headphones or a personal set of wired earbuds. Turn on the receiver using the volume dial and adjust the channel switch until you hear the audio. Most classrooms are programmed to channel 1 or 2.

If the audio signal is not clear, check to make sure the receiver has a clear ‘line of sight’ to the transmitters mounted on the walls.

What if my class location doesn’t have an Assistive Listening System installed or is located outdoors?

Discuss your needs with the Accessible Technology Specialist and determine if an FM lapel microphone and receiver set would be an effective option.

What should I do if I have hearing aids and can’t use the ALS receiver?

Discuss your needs with the Accessible Technology specialist and determine if your hearing aids are compatible with a remote microphone or a remote microphone and loop receiver combination.
