Where will the ASL Interpreter(s) sit?
The interpreters will sit or stand at the front of the classroom near the instructor and presentation materials to provide as much visual access to the student as possible. The student may work with the interpreters to determine the best location.
Will I have the same ASL Interpreter(s) for all my classes?
Interpreters will be scheduled based on service needs and students’ schedules. For classes that are more than an hour in length or with complex content, two interpreters will be assigned. They will switch every 15-20 minutes. Students can expect to have consistent interpreters for the duration of a particular course whenever possible.
What happens if I add, drop, or change a course?
Please request ASL Interpreting accommodations through My SDC Online for any course changes or newly added courses. Notify the Communication Services Supervisor once the changes have been made or if a previously registered course has been dropped.
Note that it may take up to two weeks to receive ASL Interpreting services once your request is submitted.
What if I am going to be absent or if a class is canceled?
If a class is cancelled or a student will not be attending a regularly scheduled class, the student will need to notify the Communication Services Supervisor as soon as possible. The student may also notify the assigned interpreter(s).
What can I do if I am having trouble understanding the interpreter(s) or technical vocabulary in a course?
Language access needs are unique to each student. ASL Interpreters are available to meet with a student to discuss specific language needs and preferences, so they can ensure their interpretation provides effective access for the student. Students also have the option to meet with interpreters for the purpose of establishing technical signs to be used in specific courses or agree on a specific approach to interpreting challenging vocabulary. Additionally, the Communication Services Supervisor can provide consultation and resources for students and interpreters as needed.
